Audi is set to revive the spirit of its groundbreaking A2 model with a new, affordable electric vehicle (EV) expected to launch as early as 2026. This marks the end of a 20-year hiatus since the original A2 was discontinued, and signals a strategic shift toward more accessible EV options within the Audi lineup.
Design and Positioning
The new model blends design cues from the Volkswagen ID.3 and the original A2, creating a unique tall-hatch silhouette. This vehicle is positioned to replace both the A1 hatchback and the Q2 SUV, effectively becoming Audi’s most budget-friendly EV. Pricing is expected to undercut the current Q4 e-tron, which starts at approximately €46,000 (A$82,000) in Germany.
The exterior features distinctive split headlights, more pronounced wheel arches, and subtly integrated door handles reminiscent of the Ford Mustang Mach-E. The rear design notably echoes the original A2’s iconic hunchback profile with a bisected spoiler.
Why This Matters
The original A2, despite its critical acclaim, struggled to achieve high sales figures due to its unconventional design and expensive aluminum spaceframe construction. Its narrow and tall shape didn’t appeal to all buyers, and the production costs limited aggressive pricing.
This time, Audi is taking a different approach. The new EV will utilize a traditional steel monocoque chassis and potentially the MEB+ platform, allowing for the use of cheaper lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. This cost reduction is crucial for making the vehicle competitive in the rapidly expanding EV market.
Technical Specifications
While the exact name remains unconfirmed, “Q2 e-tron” or “A2 e-tron” are strong possibilities. The vehicle will weigh more than the original A2, which tipped the scales at around 900kg, but the new platform enables lower production costs.
The original A2 was powered by small petrol and diesel engines with manual or automated transmissions. The new EV will be fully electric, offering a more sustainable and modern powertrain.
