BMW has officially launched the all-electric i3, marking the first time the iconic 3 Series has gone fully electric. The new model boasts an industry-leading range of 559 miles (900 km), surpassing competitors and establishing a new benchmark for EV performance.
Neue Klasse Platform and Key Features
The i3 is the second vehicle built on BMW’s innovative Neue Klasse platform, following the iX3 SUV. This platform utilizes an 800V Gen6 architecture designed specifically for electric vehicles. The i3 revives the name from BMW’s earlier electric hatchback (discontinued in 2022) and becomes the smallest EV in the brand’s lineup.
Notably, BMW has outpaced Mercedes-Benz, bringing the i3 to market ahead of their C-Class EQ model. An electric Audi A4 E-tron will follow later this decade, further intensifying competition in the premium EV segment.
Delayed Launch and Combustion Engine Coexistence
Despite offering the i4 electric sedan since 2021, BMW delayed the i3 until the technology matched the performance of its gasoline-powered 3 Series. The company will continue selling the existing combustion engine 3 Series alongside the i3, with a major update planned to align the ICE model with the new generation’s design and technology.
The i3 will initially launch in saloon form, with a Touring (estate) variant planned for the future. A high-performance M3 EV is also in development, previewed by the M HP BEV test mule and expected to arrive in 2028.
Battery and Charging Performance
The i3 features a 108 kWh nickel-manganese-cobalt (NMC) battery, which delivers the exceptional 559-mile range. This is a significant improvement over the iX3, despite using the same battery, thanks to the more aerodynamic saloon profile.
BMW engineers achieved this by integrating the front seats directly onto the battery pack, lowering the roofline, and creating a completely smooth underbody for optimal airflow.
When charging at a DC fast-charging station with a maximum output of 400kW, the i3 can gain 249 miles of range in just 10 minutes. AC charging is supported up to 22kW.
Market Position and Competition
The i3’s extended range makes it the EV with the longest range available in Europe, exceeding the Mercedes-Benz EQS. This positions BMW strongly in a rapidly expanding market where range anxiety remains a key concern for many buyers.
The i3’s launch is a pivotal moment for BMW, solidifying their commitment to electrification while maintaining the appeal of their best-selling 3 Series model. The competition is heating up, but BMW has clearly set a new standard for performance and practicality in the electric saloon segment.
