BYD has expanded its European lineup with the global launch of the Atto 2 plug-in hybrid (DM‑i) and the long-range Atto 2 Comfort electric vehicle, unveiled in Barcelona on November 19. The new Atto 2 DM‑i boasts a combined range of up to 1,020 km, combining electric and gasoline power, making it a strong contender in the rapidly growing European EV and hybrid market.
Extended Range and Hybrid Options
The Atto 2 DM‑i is powered by BYD’s DM‑i plug-in hybrid system, offering up to 90 km of pure electric driving on a single charge (WLTP standard). When combined with the fuel tank, the total range extends to approximately 1,020 km. The hybrid comes in two variants:
- Active: 122 kW (166 PS) with a 7.8 kWh battery, delivering around 40 km of electric range and 930 km total.
- Boost: 156 kW (212 PS) with an 18 kWh battery, providing up to 90 km electric range and 1,020 km combined.
The Boost variant accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.5 seconds and achieves a reported combined fuel consumption as low as 1.8 L/100 km.
Design and Features
The Atto 2 DM‑i features distinct design cues compared to the electric version, including a larger grille for improved engine cooling and an exclusive “Midnight Blue” color option. The vehicle measures 4.3 meters in length and includes LED headlights, a full-width rear light bar, and aerodynamic styling.
Inside, the Atto 2 DM‑i offers a 12.8-inch touchscreen, vegan leather seating, ambient lighting, a panoramic sunroof, and practical storage solutions (including a dedicated glasses compartment). The boot capacity is 425 liters, expanding to 1,335 liters with the rear seats folded. It also features Vehicle-to-Load capability, allowing up to 3.3 kW of power to be supplied to external devices.
BYD’s European Expansion
This launch reinforces BYD’s aggressive expansion in Europe, where it already sells the Seal, Han, Tang, and Atto 3 models. With the addition of the Atto 2 DM‑i and Comfort, BYD now offers a more comprehensive range of compact crossovers, sedans, and SUVs with both hybrid and battery electric powertrains.
The company plans to establish up to 1,000 retail locations across 33 European countries by the end of 2025 to support the rollout of its new models. This commitment signals BYD’s intent to become a major player in the European automotive market.
BYD’s push into Europe with both hybrid and all-electric options positions the brand to capture a wider segment of the consumer market, catering to those who may not yet be ready for a full EV transition but still want fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
