Ford is developing a production version of its extreme off-road racer, the V8-powered Raptor, with the goal of creating a vehicle that bridges the gap between high-performance supercars and rugged off-road capability. CEO Jim Farley announced the plans at the 2026 Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix in Melbourne, stating the car will “break all the rules” by blurring the lines between on-road and off-road performance.
The Future of Ford Performance
The new Raptor will leverage advancements in electric powertrains, digitally controlled suspension, and torque vectoring technology to deliver a versatile driving experience. Farley emphasized that consumers shouldn’t have to choose between a fun off-road vehicle and a fun on-road vehicle, suggesting that Ford aims to combine both worlds. This initiative aligns with the company’s broader strategy to position itself as “the Porsche of off-road,” creating a premium sub-brand focused on high-performance capabilities.
A Radical Design Inspired by Rally Racing
The foundation for this future model comes directly from Ford’s purpose-built T1+ Raptor racer, developed with M-Sport for long-distance rally raids. This vehicle boasts a dry-sump 5.0-liter Coyote V8 engine, a six-speed sequential gearbox, and a lightweight carbon-fiber body over a steel spaceframe. The suspension allows for an impressive 350mm of wheel travel, a 70-degree approach angle, and 400mm of ground clearance.
This represents a significant shift in how Ford approaches performance vehicles, moving beyond traditional hot hatches like the Fiesta ST and Focus RS.
No Revival for Old Models
Farley has ruled out bringing back enthusiast models such as the Fiesta ST, Focus ST, and Focus RS, stating the company is focused on innovation rather than revisiting the past.
