Jeep has unveiled a unique concept vehicle, the Avenger Stargazer, designed to combine off-road capability with an immersive stargazing experience. This one-off model aims to address the surprising lack of astronomical knowledge among many Brits, with almost a third admitting they struggle to identify basic constellations like Orion’s Belt, despite 73% expressing interest in learning more.
Bridging the Gap Between Cars and Cosmos
The collaboration between Jeep and DarkSky UK, a non-profit focused on reducing light pollution, resulted in the Avenger Stargazer. The compact SUV has been transformed into a mobile observatory, equipped with a custom-built storage system in the boot. This includes binoculars, headlamps, touchscreen gloves, weather-resistant gear, and a high-end Vaonis Vespera Pro Smart telescope designed to mount directly onto the vehicle’s sunroof.
The exterior wrap features striking visuals of planets and constellations, while the interior lighting has been adapted to emit red light. Red light preserves night vision, unlike white light, which hinders stargazing in light-polluted areas. This ensures optimal conditions for observing the night sky even in urban environments.
Beyond the Concept: A Practical Guide and New Trim Level
While the Stargazer remains a concept, Jeep has released a downloadable stargazing guide in partnership with DarkSky UK, complete with tips and a map of the UK’s 21 Dark Sky Reserves – ideal locations for unpolluted views.
Additionally, Jeep will launch a SkyView trim for the standard Avenger line-up in early 2024. This upgrade builds upon the Summit spec, adding a sunroof, navigation, hands-free tailgate, and keyless entry.
The Avenger Stargazer is more than just a publicity stunt; it reflects a growing interest in astronomy and a practical approach to making it more accessible. By combining automotive innovation with educational resources, Jeep is encouraging people to reconnect with the night sky.
