The Jeep Renegade, a compact SUV first introduced in 2014, is set for a major overhaul with its next generation, slated for release by 2027. This refresh aims to revitalize Jeep’s smallest offering without abandoning the core character that defined the original. The new Renegade will be positioned strategically between the smaller Avenger and larger Compass, catering to distinct customer needs in both North America and Europe.
Strategic Positioning in a Crowded Market
The upcoming Renegade will fill a critical space in Jeep’s lineup. While initially planned as an all-electric vehicle, Jeep has confirmed that the new model will also feature mild-hybrid powertrains, offering customers greater flexibility. This decision reflects a broader strategy to remain competitive in a rapidly evolving automotive landscape where regulations and consumer preferences shift quickly.
Marco Montepeloso, Head of Jeep Product Planning in Europe, emphasized this point, stating that “Freedom of Choice” remains central to Jeep’s approach. The new Renegade will maintain a similar footprint to the current model, measuring approximately 4.236 mm (166.8 inches) in length, neatly positioning it between the 4.084 mm Avenger and the 4.550 mm Compass.
Distinct Customer Base
Jeep’s data suggests a clear distinction between the target audiences for the Avenger and the Renegade. The Avenger caters to buyers prioritizing compactness, particularly in European urban environments, while the Renegade will appeal to young families or active lifestyles needing extra space.
Montepeloso explained that the two models serve distinct audiences, leaving a healthy gap for the Renegade to occupy. “I don’t see a risk of cannibalization,” he said. “There are clear differences in customers, and that’s exactly why there’s a strong opportunity for the Renegade between Avenger and Compass.”
Design and Foundations
While the final design remains under wraps, the next Renegade is expected to align with Jeep’s evolving aesthetic, featuring a compact, upright stance, the signature seven-slot grille, and modern LED lighting. The vehicle will move away from its aging FCA-era underpinnings in favor of the more advanced STLA Small platform, which also underpins the Avenger.
The interior will balance technology and practicality, with durable materials and a digital display setup. Independent designer Marco Maltese has already presented a compelling concept study, blending Jeep’s rugged styling cues with sharper, more contemporary proportions.
Powertrain and Pricing
The new Renegade will offer both mild-hybrid and potentially fully electric variants, catering to diverse market demands. Jeep has committed to offering a wide range of powertrains, ensuring adaptability as regulations evolve.
Pricing is expected to be competitive, with an electric Renegade targeting a starting price below $25,000 in North America (though this figure may be higher once tax credits are factored in). In Europe, the model will start below €30,000 (approximately $35,000).
The next-generation Jeep Renegade is poised to bridge the gap between the Avenger and Compass, offering a versatile and capable SUV for a wide range of buyers. By balancing practicality, technology, and powertrain flexibility, Jeep aims to solidify its position in the competitive subcompact SUV segment
