Mercedes-AMG Confirms G63 Convertible for US Market in 2028

Mercedes-AMG is set to revive the G63 Cabriolet, bringing a four-door open-top version of the iconic off-roader to the United States market starting in 2028. This marks the return of a G-Class convertible to American dealerships after a long hiatus – the original two-door model was discontinued over a decade ago.

A Nostalgic Return with Modern Power

Mercedes first signaled its intention to reintroduce a convertible G-Class last September, releasing prototype images of a camouflaged model. The upcoming G63 Cabriolet will retain the signature boxy design of the standard G-Class, ensuring instant recognition. Beneath the hood, it will pack the same twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter mild-hybrid V8 engine found in the hardtop version, delivering a robust 577 horsepower.

Production and Market Strategy

Production is slated to begin in the third quarter of 2027 at Mercedes’ factory in Graz, Austria. The automaker reportedly unveiled the convertible to US and Canadian dealers during a meeting in Germany, alongside other planned vehicle launches. This move aligns with Mercedes’ broader strategy to boost sales in America, aiming to surpass BMW and reach 400,000 units sold annually.

Why This Matters

The G63 Cabriolet represents a niche but highly desirable luxury offering. While its impact on overall sales volume may be limited, the model is expected to sell out quickly due to the G-Class’s strong brand appeal. The revival of this convertible also speaks to a broader trend: automakers are increasingly catering to demand for exclusive, high-end variants, even if they appeal to a small but affluent segment of buyers.

Mercedes is betting on the G63 Cabriolet as a halo product that reinforces its luxury image and strengthens its position in the competitive US market.

The G63 Convertible will be sold in most markets worldwide, including the US.
