KGM (formerly SsangYong) is rapidly expanding its electric vehicle lineup, with the Torres EVX being the latest addition. This mid-size electric SUV, built on a monocoque platform shared with the hybrid Torres and Musso EV ute, aims to deliver competitive specs at a potentially attractive price point. But in a crowded market, does it stand out?
Price and Positioning
The KGM Torres EVX enters the market with a single trim level, priced at $58,000 before on-road costs. While this positions it within the mid-range of electric SUVs, it faces strong competition from rivals like the Toyota bZ4X (starting at $55,990, with potential discounts) and the GAC Aion V (from $42,990). The key question is whether its value proposition justifies the price tag.
Interior Design and Technology
The Torres EVX’s cabin design carries over the minimalist aesthetic of other KGM models, accented by copper-toned details. The dual 12.3-inch digital screens create a modern look, but lack physical controls for some functions, which may frustrate some drivers. Notably, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are missing, along with a wireless phone charger. The infotainment system can also exhibit slight delays when using USB-connected smartphone integration.
Storage solutions are ample, although the phone holster in front of the gear selector is poorly designed and prone to dropping devices. The rear seats offer generous space for passengers, while the 465-liter boot (expandable to 703L) is competitive. However, the absence of a spare wheel—replaced by a tire repair kit—is a notable drawback.
Performance and Range
The Torres EVX draws its battery technology from BYD, offering an acceptable but not exceptional range. While some competitors offer over 500km on a single charge, the EVX’s real-world efficiency is rated at 21.7 kWh per 100km. DC fast charging peaks at a theoretical 164.8kW, but real-world rates typically max out around 118kW. The electric powertrain delivers smooth and responsive acceleration, typical of EVs, though it doesn’t push any boundaries in terms of performance.
Driving Experience
The Torres EVX offers a comfortable driving experience, with well-managed suspension that handles bumps effectively. The front-wheel-drive configuration provides adequate grip, though the vehicle can exhibit noticeable body roll during sharp maneuvers. The regenerative braking system is configurable, offering three modes that allow for near one-pedal driving. The gear selector, however, can be frustrating, requiring deliberate shifting to avoid accidental selections.
Safety and Ownership Costs
The KGM Torres EVX has not yet received a safety rating from ANCAP or Euro NCAP. Standard safety features include adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring. KGM offers a seven-year unlimited-kilometer vehicle warranty, alongside a ten-year unlimited-kilometer warranty for the BYD Blade battery pack. Maintenance costs are relatively low, with an initial free service followed by 12-month/20,000km intervals.
Verdict
The KGM Torres EVX presents a decent option in the mid-size electric SUV segment. Its spacious interior, modern design, and competitive features make it worth considering. However, its higher price, limited range, and lack of certain amenities may steer some buyers towards rival models. Ultimately, the Torres EVX’s success will hinge on whether KGM can establish a stronger brand reputation and address concerns about resale value.
