Lamborghini will delay its fully electric vehicle plans, opting instead to expand its lineup of V8 and V12 models. The company’s CEO, Stephen Winkelmann, confirmed that while an EV remains a long-term goal, current market demand and customer feedback indicate a strong preference for traditional combustion engines.
Market Resistance to EVs
Lamborghini’s decision reflects a broader trend in the luxury automotive sector. Winkelmann noted a “significant increase in resistance” to EVs among its customer base, with many buyers expressing dissatisfaction with their EV experiences. Despite ongoing investment in EV technology, the company sees little immediate shift towards large-scale electric car adoption in the high-end market.
“Resistance to EVs has increased significantly worldwide in our segment… Many customers have tried EVs, but let’s say their experience didn’t quite live up to their expectations,” Winkelmann told Reuters.
This reluctance is not solely consumer-driven. Lamborghini, like other high-performance brands, is navigating a complex landscape of uncertain EV demand, shifting regulations, and economic pressures. The brand’s financial performance, however, remains strong.
Record Sales and Revenue Growth
Lamborghini reported record sales of 10,747 vehicles in 2025, with revenue reaching €3.20 billion—a 3.3% increase year-over-year. Operating income hit €768 million with a 24% margin, even after accounting for costs related to the revised Direzione Cor Tauri electrification strategy. These numbers give Lamborghini financial leeway to prioritize combustion engines while still preparing for an eventual EV transition.
Future Model Plans: V12 and V8 Dominate
The Lanzador crossover, originally intended as Lamborghini’s first EV, will now launch as a hybrid before the end of the decade. Meanwhile, the company is focusing on expanding its Revuelto and Urus lines. New variants—including a Revuelto Roadster, a higher-performance Revuelto model, and an aggressive Performante plug-in hybrid Urus—are already in development.
Lamborghini’s strategy is straightforward: cater to existing demand while keeping EV technology in reserve. The brand’s core audience clearly favors the visceral experience of high-performance combustion engines, and Lamborghini intends to deliver.
Lamborghini’s approach is a calculated response to market realities. While the automotive industry moves toward electrification, the luxury supercar segment continues to resist. By prioritizing V8s and V12s in the short term, Lamborghini secures its financial position and satisfies its customer base, ensuring it can transition to EVs on its own terms.
