Nissan is set to significantly expand its Nismo performance division, with plans to double the number of high-performance models from five to ten. A hot hatchback version of the Micra is widely expected to lead this new wave, drawing on existing platform synergies with the Alpine A290.
Nismo Expansion and Model Strategy
Nissan has publicly committed to launching five new Nismo models, signaling a deeper investment in performance-oriented vehicles. The company will also explore partnerships with external entities to accelerate development and broaden its reach. This approach acknowledges that leveraging existing technologies—like those pioneered by Alpine—can streamline the creation of high-performance versions of its current lineup.
Micra Nismo: Leveraging Existing Technology
The Micra Nismo is a strong candidate for the first new model because Nissan has produced hot versions of the supermini before. The Alpine A290, which shares the same platform, provides a blueprint for upgrades. The current Micra produces up to 148 bhp, while the A290’s most powerful version delivers 217 bhp, achieving 0–62 mph in under six seconds.
However, simply increasing horsepower isn’t enough. Alpine also upgraded the chassis with a wider track, larger wheels and brakes, and improved suspension. Nissan could efficiently replicate these enhancements for the Micra Nismo, potentially including features reminiscent of the original Nissan Micra Super Turbo, such as inset auxiliary spotlights.
Future Outlook
While Nissan hasn’t formally announced the Micra Nismo, industry expectations suggest its arrival is imminent. The company’s willingness to collaborate on performance projects, combined with the proven platform and existing hot hatch pedigree, makes this a logical step in expanding the Nismo brand.
