New Leadership at Seat-Cupra: A Focus on Growth and EV Development

Markus Haupt, the newly appointed CEO of Seat-Cupra, is steering the brand toward continued expansion, particularly in the critical area of affordable electric vehicles. His arrival marks a shift in leadership style from his predecessors, Luca de Meo and Wayne Griffiths, who were known for their charismatic and attention-grabbing approaches.

A Change in Leadership Philosophy

Haupt’s background is rooted in engineering and logistics—a departure from the sales and marketing focus of previous leadership. He emphasizes a pragmatic approach to growth, stating the need to “keep growing” the brand. His appointment follows Griffiths’ sudden departure earlier this year, with Haupt initially serving as interim CEO before assuming the permanent role.

Extensive Automotive Experience

Haupt’s career spans over two decades within the Volkswagen Group, beginning with Seat. He played key roles in projects like preparing the Martorell plant for Audi Q3 production and leading logistics for the group’s A0 small car platform. Before returning to Seat-Cupra in 2022, he oversaw VW’s EV projects and managed VW’s Spanish plant. His diverse experience provides a solid foundation for guiding Cupra’s future.

Prioritizing Affordable EVs

A major reason for Haupt’s appointment is Cupra’s central role in the Volkswagen Group’s development of the MEB Entry platform—a project to deliver urban EVs at a price point of around £22,000. Cupra is positioned as “the clear leader” in this endeavor, highlighting the brand’s importance to VW’s broader EV strategy.

The Path Forward

Haupt’s leadership signals a new era for Seat-Cupra—one focused on sustainable growth, operational efficiency, and the successful launch of affordable electric vehicles. This transition is crucial for the brand as it navigates the evolving automotive landscape.
