Polestar will expand its presence in the Australian electric vehicle (EV) market with the release of its upcoming compact SUV, the Polestar 7, expected to arrive between late 2027 and early 2028. This confirmation comes from Polestar Cars Australia managing director Scott Maynard, signaling the brand’s commitment to offering a more affordable entry point into its premium EV lineup.
Market Entry and Timing
The Polestar 7 will follow the launch of updated Polestar 4 and second-generation Polestar 2 models, both slated for an Australian release in 2027. The delay into 2028 is due to production timelines and logistical considerations for the Australian market. This timing positions Polestar to capitalize on the growing demand for compact SUVs, which currently represent roughly one-third of all battery electric vehicle (BEV) sales in Europe.
Strategic Expansion into Key Segment
The Polestar 7 is designed to compete directly in the high-volume compact SUV segment, a strategic move by CEO Michael Lohscheller to offer a “progressive performance-driven car for a very attractive price point.” Production is confirmed for Europe, with potential expansion to other regions like China to meet demand. The company aims to leverage the popularity of the segment while maintaining its premium brand identity.
Production and Global Strategy
The Polestar 7 is expected to be similar in size to the Volvo XC40, potentially aligning with the next generation of Volvo’s compact SUV, which is due for an update by 2027–2028. Currently, Polestar sources vehicles from China, with some models also produced in the USA and South Korea. This diversified production strategy allows for flexibility and resilience in supply chains.
Sales Growth and Market Position
Polestar experienced a 38.5% increase in Australian sales in 2023, registering 2,373 new vehicles. While still significantly lower in volume compared to Tesla, the Polestar 4 coupe SUV led sales with 1,295 deliveries, followed by the Polestar 2 and Polestar 3. The company anticipates continued growth with the upcoming launch of the Polestar 5 flagship GT and a new variant of the Polestar 4.
The Polestar 7’s arrival will solidify the brand’s position in the rapidly evolving EV market. This expansion into the compact SUV segment underscores Polestar’s commitment to offering a broader range of electric vehicles while maintaining its focus on performance and sustainability.
