The Porsche Macan has secured its ninth win on Car and Driver’s 10Best Trucks and SUVs list, proving its enduring appeal as the closest thing to a sports sedan in the SUV market. This latest recognition applies to the entire gas-powered Macan range, from the base 261-hp model to the high-performance 434-hp GTS.
Unrivaled Handling and Performance
What sets the Macan apart is its ability to deliver sports-car-level handling in a practical SUV package. Senior editor Ezra Dyer aptly described it as “the only SUV that can do a convincing impression of a really good sports sedan.” The Macan excels on winding roads with precise steering, impressive grip, and robust brakes. It’s a vehicle that doesn’t just perform well—it provides the driver with meaningful feedback and chassis composure that feels unusual for its size.
The top-spec GTS, equipped with a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V-6, launches from 0 to 60 mph in just 3.7 seconds thanks to all-wheel drive and a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Even the base 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder trims are notably quick, hitting 60 mph in five seconds. Despite its performance focus, the Macan remains a usable five-seater, blending luxury with practicality.
Customization and Capability
Porsche offers extensive customization options for the Macan, allowing buyers to tailor the interior, exterior, and mechanical features. Upgrades include adaptive air suspension, brake-based torque vectoring, and high-performance summer tires that enable nearly 1.00 g of lateral grip. Properly equipped, the Macan can also tow over two tons, adding to its versatility.
Gas vs. Electric: Value and Engagement
The traditionally powered Macan variants currently offer greater value and driver engagement compared to the newer, more expensive electric models. While not as quick in a straight line, the gas-powered options retain the Macan’s signature driving experience.
Drawbacks and Considerations
The Macan’s rear seats are somewhat cramped for the class, and the price can quickly exceed $100,000 when options are added to the $66,850 base price. However, as associate news editor Jack Fitzgerald noted, the Macan GTS is a vehicle many drivers would gladly fit into their lives if they could.
Despite minor downsides, the Porsche Macan continues to stand out as the most engaging and capable compact SUV in its class, solidifying its decade-long reign as a 10Best winner.
