Renntech, a prominent Mercedes-Benz tuner, is preparing to launch a highly exclusive revival of the iconic C126 SEC coupe, powered by a massive 7.5-liter V12 engine and an unexpected feature: a seven-speed manual gearbox. This project, dubbed the SEC V12 Sledgehammer, pays homage to the high-performance “Hammer” models of the 1980s while pushing the boundaries of modern restomodding.
The Engine: A Modern Take on a Classic
At the heart of the Sledgehammer lies a re-engineered version of the Mercedes M120 V12, the engine that powered the CLK GTR and Pagani Zonda. Renntech has increased the displacement to 7.5 liters, boosting output to 650 horsepower and 650 lb-ft of torque. The engine includes custom equal-length headers, forged internals, CNC-ported cylinder heads, and advanced intake/exhaust systems – ensuring both performance and a distinctive sound.
Why a Manual? The Pagani Connection
The most striking element of this build is the choice of a seven-speed manual gearbox. While unusual in modern high-performance cars, this decision isn’t arbitrary. Renntech’s choice mirrors the setup used by Pagani, another manufacturer leveraging Mercedes-AMG V12 engines. The gearbox itself is likely sourced from specialist firms like Xtrac, known for high-end manual transmissions. This move is significant because it caters to enthusiasts who prefer the direct engagement of a manual in a powerful, rear-wheel-drive grand tourer.
Aggressive Styling and Limited Production
Renntech is transforming the C126 SEC’s appearance with a bespoke body kit. The design incorporates wider quarter panels, revised front grilles, a unique hood, and aerodynamic enhancements like a rear diffuser and lip spoiler. The car will also feature custom 19-inch forged wheels and upgraded brakes. Only 12 examples of the SEC V12 Sledgehammer will be produced worldwide, making it an exceptionally rare and desirable vehicle.
Interior Customization and Timeline
Customers will have full control over the interior, with access to a wide range of materials and finishes. Pricing details have not been revealed, but the first completed vehicle is slated for delivery in 2027. This project represents a fusion of classic Mercedes-Benz luxury with modern performance engineering, targeting a niche market of discerning collectors and enthusiasts.
