Rare 2008 Spyker C8 Laviolette Up for Auction

18

Dutch automaker Spyker carved its own path in the high-performance car world, blending aviation-inspired design with modern engineering. A unique 2008 Spyker C8 Laviolette is currently for sale on Bring a Trailer, offering a rare opportunity to own a piece of automotive history.

A Different Breed of Supercar

The Netherlands, while famous for cycling, has quietly made significant contributions to the automotive industry. Spyker, founded at the turn of the 21st century, built on a legacy of aircraft engine manufacturing. The firm adopted propeller badges and emphasized polished aluminum styling, creating cars with a level of detail rarely seen elsewhere.

Inside the Laviolette: Aviation Meets Automotive Art

The C8 Laviolette stands out with its glass canopy roof, a manual transmission, and an interior that evokes the spirit of early aviation. The exposed gearshift linkage, pivoting around a central chromed rod, is a mechanical masterpiece rivaling even Ferrari’s gated shifters. The aeronautical four-spoke steering wheel and polished rings further enhance the art deco aesthetic.

Performance and Rarity

Under the hood, the Laviolette boasts a naturally aspirated 4.2-liter Audi V-8 engine producing 400 horsepower. While it might not outrun a contemporary Porsche 911 Turbo, its agility and distinctive sound make it a proper sports car. The Laviolette is particularly rare, with only around 60 units produced. This example shows just 1,600 miles and has undergone a thorough overhaul by Spyker specialist Jasper den Dopper.

A Brand Reborn

Jasper den Dopper’s passion for Spyker has led to the company’s planned revival. The founder retains the rights to the name, and den Dopper is spearheading the return to building new cars. This demonstrates that in a market obsessed with lap times, standing out by being uniquely Dutch can be a winning strategy.

The auction ends on April 6.

Spyker proved that performance isn’t just about speed; it’s about creating something special, something different. The C8 Laviolette embodies this philosophy.
