Stellantis to Launch Chinese EV Leapmotor in Europe

20

Stellantis is preparing to introduce Leapmotor, a Chinese electric vehicle brand, into the European market, aiming to compete directly with established automakers and emerging EV rivals. The move follows a €1.5 billion investment in Leapmotor in 2023, giving Stellantis a controlling 51% stake in the joint venture managing international distribution.

Leapmotor’s European Lineup

The initial offering will include the A10 (marketed as B03x in Europe), a small SUV positioned below Leapmotor’s existing B10 model. A mechanically related hatchback is planned for release in 2026. The A10/B03x will be part of an expanded European lineup that already includes the T03, B05, B10, and C10 models.

The new EV features a modern design with rounded contours and LED lighting. It measures over 4.2 meters long, 1.8 meters wide, and 1.6 meters tall, placing it firmly within the compact SUV segment. The vehicle will be equipped with advanced driver-assistance systems, including a roof-mounted Lidar unit and visible sensors.

New Platform and Technology

The A10/B03x is the first model built on Leapmotor’s new global A-Segment platform. It will feature a high-energy-density LFP battery, offering a CLTC range of 500 km (311 miles). The cabin is expected to follow Leapmotor’s minimalist design, with a large infotainment display and seating for five. The vehicle will also support over-the-air updates.

Competitive Landscape

The Leapmotor A10 will compete against a crowded field of electric crossovers in Europe, including the Citroen e-C3 Aircross, Opel Frontera Electric, Renault 4 E-Tech, Kia EV3, Peugeot E-2008, Fiat 600e, Jeep Avenger, Alfa Romeo Junior, Ford Puma Gen-E, VW ID.Cross, and Skoda Epiq.

In China, the A10 will go head-to-head with the BYD Yuan Up, priced between ¥96,800 and ¥119,800 (approximately $13,600–$16,900). Stellantis aims to target “rational customers” seeking an affordable second vehicle or those transitioning from combustion engines without compromising on safety or technology.

Leapmotor’s Growth

Leapmotor has experienced significant growth, delivering 395,516 vehicles globally between January and September 2023, a 129% increase year-on-year. October sales reached a record 70,289 units, marking a sixth consecutive month of growth. The expansion into Europe represents a key step in Leapmotor’s international strategy.

Stellantis’ reliance on Chinese EV technology underscores the growing dominance of Asian automakers in the electric vehicle market. The partnership with Leapmotor provides Stellantis with a cost-effective entry point into the competitive European EV sector, while Leapmotor gains access to established distribution networks and brand recognition.
