Subaru has entered the competitive three-row electric SUV market with the Getaway, a new model designed to appeal to loyal customers seeking a larger, all-electric vehicle. Unveiled at the 2026 New York auto show, the Getaway leverages the Toyota Highlander EV platform while offering distinct Subaru enhancements in power and features.
Performance and Range
The Getaway stands out with its standard dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, delivering a robust 420 horsepower – surpassing the Toyota Highlander EV’s AWD output. Subaru projects a driving range exceeding 300 miles on the larger 96-kWh battery pack. A standard-range model with a 77-kWh pack will arrive later, though its range remains unconfirmed. The vehicle incorporates a NACS charge port for Tesla Supercharger network access, allowing for an approximate 10-80% recharge in 30 minutes using a 150-kW connection.
Design and Interior
Visually, the Getaway shares significant design elements with the Toyota Highlander EV, particularly in its overall shape. However, Subaru differentiates the vehicle through a unique front fascia featuring an illuminated logo, distinct headlamps, and an illuminated “SUBARU” script across the rear liftgate.
Inside, the Getaway mirrors the spaciousness of competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9, with a 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 14.0-inch center touchscreen. Trim levels – Premium, Limited, and Touring – offer varying degrees of luxury. The Premium model includes faux-leather upholstery and captain’s chairs for six passengers, while the Limited trim adds heated seats throughout and the option of a seven-seat configuration. The top-tier Touring model features nappa leather, a Harman Kardon stereo, and a panoramic sunroof.
Practicality and Off-Road Capability
Subaru continues its tradition of light off-road readiness, equipping the Getaway with 8.3 inches of ground clearance, Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud driving modes, and “Grip Control” for off-road cruise control. The SUV also boasts a 3500-pound towing capacity, making it suitable for smaller trailers or boats.
Market Positioning and Availability
The 2027 Subaru Getaway is slated to arrive in showrooms in late 2026, with the standard-range variant following in early 2027. Pricing is expected to start in the mid-$50,000 range, aligning it with key competitors like Kia and Hyundai.
The Getaway represents Subaru’s commitment to expanding its electric lineup while retaining the brand’s core values of capability and practicality. It’s a clear signal that Subaru intends to compete directly in the rapidly growing EV SUV segment.
