Toyota Launches First Electric Highlander: A New Era for Three-Row SUVs

Toyota is redefining its popular Highlander model with the introduction of a fully electric version for the 2027 model year. This marks a significant step for the automaker, delivering its first electric three-row SUV and fourth EV offering in the US market. The new Highlander isn’t just an electrification of an existing platform; it represents a complete redesign, incorporating a fresh aesthetic, advanced interior features, and cutting-edge technology.

The Electric Powertrain Options

The 2027 Highlander EV will be available in two trim levels: XLE and Limited. Buyers can choose between two battery pack sizes: a standard 77.0-kWh option offering up to 287 miles of range, or an upgraded 95.8-kWh pack extending the range to 320 miles. Both configurations feature a single electric motor, with power output varying slightly depending on the chosen battery and drivetrain (front-wheel or all-wheel drive). The base XLE model delivers 221 horsepower, while upgraded AWD variants produce 338 hp and 328 lb-ft of torque. All models will include the North American Charging Standard (NACS) port for seamless charging compatibility. The Highlander EV also integrates vehicle-to-load (V2L) technology, allowing users to power external devices or serve as a backup energy source in emergencies.

Redesigned Interior & Exterior

The Highlander EV presents a striking exterior design with sharp lines, broad fenders, and full-length LED daytime running lights. The interior boasts a modern aesthetic, highlighted by a 14.0-inch central touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. Toyota has prioritized comfort with standard SofTex faux leather upholstery across all three rows and available heated/ventilated front seats. The third row folds flat to maximize cargo space, providing up to 45.0 cubic feet behind the second row. An optional panoramic glass roof adds further refinement.

Safety & Availability

Toyota Safety Sense 4.0 (TSS 4.0) comes standard, including features like pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full-speed range dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure alert, and proactive driving assist. Additional safety technologies such as a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert and parking assist with automatic braking are also included.

Production of the 2027 Highlander EV is slated to begin in late 2026 at Toyota’s Georgetown, Kentucky facility, with batteries sourced from its North Carolina plant. Sales are expected to follow later in the same year, with pricing anticipated to start around $48,000.
