Volkswagen is preparing to expand its electric vehicle lineup with the ID. Polo, a compact EV hatchback, alongside a performance-focused GTI variant. Prototypes of both models have been spotted undergoing testing, signaling an imminent global launch later this year.
New Models, Familiar Names
The ID. Polo represents Volkswagen’s strategy of leveraging its established model names for its electric vehicles, aiming for instant recognition among consumers. It will slot in below the ID.3 in the company’s EV range, maintaining a similar size to the current gasoline-powered Polo at 4053mm in length. Notably, Volkswagen intends to sell both the ID. Polo and the conventional Polo side-by-side, with the latter receiving updates, including potential mild-hybrid or hybrid options.
Design and Interior Details
Spy shots reveal a design heavily influenced by the 2023 ID. 2all concept, featuring sharp lines and a modern aesthetic. The ID. Polo will include sporty design cues such as an integrated rear spoiler and a diffuser-style bumper, particularly on higher trim levels like the R-Line.
Inside, Volkswagen has addressed customer feedback by moving away from the capacitive switchgear found in the ID.3. The ID. Polo will feature more traditional physical controls alongside a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.0-inch central touchscreen. The interior design even includes retro elements such as a virtual cassette tape display, blending modern technology with nostalgic touches.
Performance and Charging Options
The ID. Polo will offer two battery pack options: a 37kWh version paired with either an 85kW or 99kW electric motor, and a larger 52kWh pack delivering up to 166kW of power in the GTI trim. DC fast charging capabilities will range up to 90kW for the smaller battery and 130kW for the larger one. This range of options suggests Volkswagen intends to cater to diverse consumer preferences, from efficiency-focused city driving to more spirited performance.
Global Availability and Pricing
Volkswagen Australia has confirmed that the production Polo EV will be available in local showrooms, though specific timing remains unspecified. European pricing is estimated to begin around €25,000 ($A41,640) for the base ID. Polo, compared to approximately €20,000 ($A33,300) for gasoline-powered versions.
The launch of the ID. Polo and its GTI variant marks a significant step in Volkswagen’s electrification strategy, demonstrating the company’s commitment to both maintaining its existing model lineup and aggressively expanding into the EV market.
