Wuling Binguo S Gets Range Boost to Challenge MG4

Wuling is set to shake up the competitive Chinese electric vehicle (EV) market with an extended-range version of its popular Binguo S hatchback. This new model, detailed by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, boasts a 52.9 kWh battery pack promising a CLTC range of 525 kilometers – putting it head-to-head with the similarly sized and priced MG4.

The Binguo S is already well established in its segment, known for its compact dimensions (4,265 mm long, 1,785 mm wide, 1,600 mm high) and appealingly affordable price tag. Its new competitor, the MG4, also belongs to SAIC Motor group, highlighting a strategic move by Wuling within this automotive empire. While no official launch date has been announced, the upcoming Binguo S variant is poised to intensify rivalry in the rapidly growing compact EV segment.

Existing Binguo S models feature a distinctive design language: a closed front grille echoing its electric nature, polygonal headlights accented by “C”-shaped daytime running lights, and a full-width LED light strip spanning the rear. The cabin offers a modern look with an 8.88-inch digital instrument cluster and a 12.8-inch floating center touchscreen dominating the dashboard. Passengers will find amenities such as a three-spoke steering wheel, a shift-by-wire gear lever, and a wireless charging pad.

Interior appointments cater to different tastes with choices in Soft White or Warm Brown color schemes. Even base models are equipped with practical features like tyre pressure monitoring, a reversing camera, cruise control, keyless entry via Bluetooth, push-button start, and a six-speaker audio system. Higher trim levels add conveniences such as a panoramic camera system, power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated front seats, and electrically folding mirrors.

Currently, the Binguo S is available with two battery options: 31.9 kWh (offering a 325 km CLTC range) and 41.9 kWh (delivering a 430 km CLTC range). Both versions share a front-mounted single electric motor generating 75 kW of power and 180 Nm of torque, paired with lithium-iron-phosphate batteries. This setup allows for DC fast charging from 30% to 80% in approximately 35 minutes. Safety features include four airbags, electronic stability control, and hill-start assist across the board.

The current Binguo S lineup starts at 66,800 yuan (approximately $9,400 USD) and goes up to 79,800 yuan ($11,300 USD). Wuling has yet to reveal detailed pricing or specification differences for the new long-range variant.
