Subaru recently unveiled the WRX STI Sport# prototype at the Tokyo Auto Salon, but the reveal has left many enthusiasts underwhelmed. The vehicle is essentially a manual-transmission version of the WRX S4 STI currently available in Japan – a fact that diverges sharply from the expectation of a full-fledged STI revival.
The Teaser Campaign and Disappointment
Subaru strategically released teaser videos that fueled speculation of a significant STI comeback. The campaign, largely aimed at Japanese markets, drew considerable attention, especially from North American fans who have not seen a new STI model since 2021. The reality, however, is that the Sport# is a minor update rather than the high-performance model many hoped for.
What the Sport# Actually Offers
The STI Sport# addresses a key limitation of the Japanese WRX S4 STI by adding a manual transmission. Previously, this variant – which shares the 271-horsepower 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer engine with the U.S. WRX – was exclusively offered with an automatic gearbox. The Sport# corrects this, aligning with some details teased in the promotional clips.
Visually, the Sport# features minor cosmetic changes, including a more aggressive grille mesh and the removal of the standard STI rear wing. A bright-red lower body accent was displayed at the Auto Salon but might be an optional feature. Subaru has yet to release detailed specifications.
Why This Matters: The Global STI Demand
The underwhelming reveal highlights the continued demand for a high-performance STI model, particularly in the United States. The absence of a proper STI in the American market since 2021 has created a gap that Subaru seems aware of, given their earlier debut of STI-branded hot hatches at the Tokyo auto show last October.
The Sport# is a reminder that enthusiast communities respond to aggressive marketing, but Subaru must deliver on performance expectations to truly satisfy the global demand for a modern STI. The company’s next move will be critical in keeping the legendary nameplate relevant.
