Toyota has officially unveiled the name and first undisguised images of its upcoming supercar: the Toyota GR GT. The reveal comes ahead of a full online debut this Friday, December 5th, at 11:00 AM Tokyo time, with a public premiere scheduled for the 2026 Tokyo Auto Salon (January 9-11).

Design Details Emerge

A recent 30-second Japanese TV commercial showcased the GR GT without camouflage, though darkened to obscure finer details. The car features an aggressively long hood, pronounced rear fenders, and distinctive front/rear lighting cues reminiscent of the 2026 GR010 Le Mans hypercar racer. The teaser video also includes a cameo from the Nürburgring Edition Lexus LFA, hinting at the GR GT’s positioning as a spiritual successor to the iconic hypercar.

Toyota’s First GR-Branded Supercar

This marks the first time Toyota will release a supercar under the Gazoo Racing (GR) banner. For years, speculation centered on the name and powertrain following the 2020 GR GT3 race car concept. Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda confirmed he personally named the vehicle, and the “Toyota GR GT” trademark has been filed in multiple countries, including Australia.

V8 Power Confirmed

The teaser’s soundtrack strongly suggests a V8 engine will power the GR GT, following in the footsteps of the LFA’s V10 and the classic 2000GT’s inline-six. Toyota recently confirmed development of a new V8, which is also expected to be used in Lexus models. The engine is widely believed to be a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8, paired with an automatic transmission.

Hybrid Potential

While Toyota plans hybrid versions for most models, the GR GT is expected to feature a high-performance V8 assisted by electric motors, potentially exceeding 660kW (885 hp) of total output. The same powertrain could also be used in a Lexus sister model, possibly called the LFR, serving as a replacement for the discontinued LFA. Prototypes of the LFR have already been spotted testing at the Nürburgring and Spa-Francorchamps.

Pricing and Position

The GR GT will sit at the top of Toyota’s passenger car lineup, priced above the A90 Supra ($105,295) but below the $700,000 LFA. The GR GT is also expected to form the basis for a GT3-spec endurance racer.

The Toyota GR GT represents a significant step for the brand, combining racing heritage with high-performance road car engineering. The V8 powertrain and potential hybrid integration signal Toyota’s commitment to pushing boundaries in the supercar segment.
